At the heart of good education are the needs of the individual student and I am proud that Batley Girls’ Sixth Form Centre presents all our students with the opportunity to fulfil their potential in every sense of the word. We have a care for the whole person and this is why we have a dedicated team of experienced Sixth Form Tutors and a fully committed Sixth Form Pastoral Team.
Our philosophy can be demonstrated in a number of ways:
We are different to many Sixth Form centres in that we do not limit subject choice. Our students choose the subjects they wish to take in the first instance. Only when we’ve listened to their needs do we organise subjects into “blocks”. Student choice is at the heart of this process.
We firmly believe in student voice. The Sixth Form Council is the link between students and staff. We have a Sixth Form Leadership Team of Head Girl, three Assistant Head Girls in addition to the 20 strong Sixth Form Council. I am privileged to be able to work with this team and they do a marvellous job in representing the interests of all students and really helping to move the Sixth Form forward.
We are proud to have a very close relationship with the University of Huddersfield. All our Year 12 students on Advanced courses follow the Progression Module. This course is delivered through PSHCE in combination with the University. All students who complete the course attend a graduation ceremony at the University and receive 30 UCAS points to help them gain places at local Universities.
We are excited about our partnership with Leeds University on their Reach for Excellence scheme. This allows some of our top performing students to attend a range of workshops and a week long Summer School, all of which is designed to smooth their transition into any one of the top twenty Universities in the country.
We are pleased that York University hosts our annual Year 12 Easter residential focusing on study skills and personal development. This comes at a vital time as students’ really begin to hone their skills in preparation for the Summer exams.
We thoroughly enjoy our annual Awards and Alumni Event, the first of which was held at Anam’s, Bradford in June 2007. This gives us a marvellous opportunity to meet ex-students and wave goodbye to our leaving Year 13 students. It also gives us a chance to present the range of trophies, shields, iPods and vouchers we offer as prizes to our outstanding students.
We are proud of all these things and many more, but most of all we are proud of our students, the work they do and the success they achieve.
