English at Batley Girls' High School

The English Department at Batley Girls' High School aims to give all our students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills so that they can reach their full social and learning potential. We aim to develop our students' fluency in using Standard English, without devaluing local dialect usage or the language spoken in the home. We also aim to help our students to develop their aesthetic appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of texts, as well as giving them a good understanding of techniques used by the mass media.

Year on year we achieve very good results with all year groups. We believe in stretching and challenging Gifted and Talented students but also focus on those students who join us without achieving level 4 at Key Stage 2. Our faculty teaching assistant runs a progress class outside lesson time and a better reading programme which uses the input of older students to support Year 7 and 8 students. We provide after school coaching sessions for Key Stage 4 and 5 students and run the English homework club every lunch time in our dedicated computer room.

Key Stage 3 English

We use the Literacy Strategy throughout KS3. The course develops skills in:
Speaking and Listening; Reading; Writing

Students are assessed regularly throughout the year.

In each year students study the three main genres of literature: drama (including drama written by Shakespeare), prose and poetry. They learn how to analyse non-literary texts (including media texts).

English Club is run every lunchtime in Room 34. Students are welcome to attend if they need extra help with their classwork or homework. Alternatively they can use the computers and go online to research topics studied in class.

Key Stage 4 English

At KS4 we follow the AQA Language and Literature GCSE courses and the AQA Media GCSE course (two groups only).

Key Stage 5 English

At KS5 we offer the following:

AS/A2 Language (AQA B)

AS/A2 Literature (AQA B)

AS/A2 Media (AQA)
