Mathematics at Batley Girls' High School

The Maths Department at Batley Girls' High School continues to improve and develop. Our students have benefited greatly from the successful implementation of the Key Stage 3 National Numeracy Strategy and the move towards a modular course at GCSE. As a result, we have seen a continuous improvement our SATs and GCSE results.

Students are set from the start of Year 7, based on ability. Student setting continues to be reviewed each term during Key Stage 3, based on regular assessments. We deliberately target our gifted and talented students. They are challenged to reach their maximum potential using a variety of extension tasks both in and out of lessons. Students are encouraged to mentor their peers: we have found this to be a very effective two-way learning process. Our dedicated Faculty Teaching Assistant provides support in lessons, during registration and at lunchtimes to help all students achieve their target grades.

In any year, a mixture of learning activities is used, including teacher-led discussions and tasks, small group investigations, use of ICT, practical projects and textbook practice. To assist in our teaching we now have a suite of 16 laptops available for use only in maths. We also have a class set of Quizdom handsets which make lessons fully interactive. Our aim is to make mathematics as accessible and enjoyable as possible for all of our students through the use of a variety of teaching methods.

Key Stage 3 Mathematics

We use the Numeracy Strategy throughout KS3. The content of the course is divided into the following topics:

Number
Algebra
Shape, Space and Measures
Handling Data
Topics are revisited and extended throughout Year 7, 8 and 9 in order to deepen understanding and build on previous knowledge.Students are assessed regularly throughout the year.

Maths Club is run every Monday lunchtime in the LRC. Students are welcome to attend if they need extra help with their classwork or homework. Alternatively they can use the computers and go online to use maths websites to practise different topics. We also have a selection of board-games and jigsaws to help students develop their logic and problem solving skills.

Key Stage 4 Mathematics

At KS4 we follow the Edexcel Modular syllabus. We find that by setting short-term goals, the course fits students needs and abilities.

Key Stage 5 Mathematics

Students that choose to continue with Maths at AS and A level follow the OCR specification. We teach Core (pure mathematics) and Statistics units.

To be successful at this level, students need to be independent learners. They will be expected to study for an extra six hours out of lesson time, must be prepared to read around their subject and will need to research help when necessary. When they fit these criteria, students find A level maths to be an extremely rewarding course leading to a very well regarded qualification.

Maths Challenge

Each year around 70 students take part in the UKMT Maths Challenge. We enter students at all three levels: Junior (for Years 7 and 8), Intermediate (Years 9, 10 and 11) and Senior (Year 12 and 13). Students who have skills in problem solving, logical reasoning and general mathematical ability would enjoy these challenges. Dates of the next challenges are as follows:

Senior - Thursday 6th November 2008
Intermediate - Thursday 5th February 2009
Junior - Thursday 30th April 2009
