Media Studies at Batley Girls’ High School

Media Studies is a fairly new addition to the school curriculum. We introduced the subject in order to develop and build on student interest in an area which has a huge impact on all our lives. By offering Media Studies, we aim to give students the opportunity to ‘read’ the media and understand the influences that it is trying to exert on the way we view the world and the opinions we have about particular subjects or world events.

Within this subject, we expect students to combine analytical and creative skills to develop an understanding of the ways, and the reasons why, media products are created and distributed. We also study the ethical and legal issues which surround and impact on them.

Media Studies develops and expands many of the skills learned in other curriculum areas. We enable students to gain transferable skills and develop their Personal, Learning and Thinking skills. Students will learn practical skills in digital photo editing and Adobe Photoshop, design and graphic art skills, digital video editing as well as research and writing skills.

Key Stage 4 Media Studies

In Years 10 and 11 Media Studies is offered to certain English sets as an alternative to GCSE English Literature. It is also offered as an option on an invitation only basis. The students study for the OCR National in Media at either a Certificate or an Award level.
