PSHCE at Batley Girls’ High School

PSHCE is those aspects of the school that raise confidence and esteem; provide a supportive climate for learning; a foundation for acquiring skills; increase motivation and deepen “real life” learning; improve students’ ability to reflect on and become responsible for their own learning; reduce the chances that education will be disrupted by pregnancy, bullying etc; provide the opportunity to explore moral, social and ethical issues and develop skills which will help students to make informed choices in their personal, work and social lives.

The PSHE and Citizenship framework covers four strands
  • Developing confidence and responsibility and making the most of their abilities
  • Preparing to play an active role as citizens
  • Developing a healthy, safer lifestyle
  • Develop good relationships and respecting the differences between people

Formal and informal curriculum
PSHCE is timetabled for one lesson per week but there are aspects which are integrated into other subject areas and the informal curriculum. The Criteria for the Healthy Schools Standard underpin the PSHCE curriculum, identifying our need to encourage, develop, support student “health” and “well-being” in its widest context.

Statutory requirements
  • SRE (Sex and Relationship Education) at Key Stages 3 and 4
  • Careers and Guidance at Key Stages 3 and 4
  • Citizenship Education at Key Stages 3 and 4

These are developed through
  • A weekly PSHCE lesson
  • Science - SRE and Drugs Education
  • Food technology and horticulture - Healthy Eating
  • PE - Physical fitness
  • Work Related Education - Careers Education and Guidance
  • Cross curricular themes - Citizenship and Enterprise Education
  • Extended Learning Days

The Group Tutor has a key role promoting the ethos and outcomes of the “Every Child Matters” agenda. The PSHCE curriculum is an essential part of the tutor role, not just in the timetabled PSHCE lessons but with the introduction of “Investors in Pupils”.

Group Tutors work with their tutor group to fulfil the principles of IIP. The tutor group
  • Is committed to the development of all its members
  • Regularly reviews the needs of all its members
  • Takes action to develop members in line with the class plan
  • Understands the difference its members makes to class performance

“Every child Matters” emphasises the importance of
  • Staying Safe
  • Being Healthy
