Curriculum Information

Key Stage 3 – years 7 and 8

Three years ago Batley Girls’ High School introduced an innovative competency curriculum for all of year 7. This incorporates History, Geography, RE, ICT, Music, Drama and PSHE in a series of broad cross-curricular topics which are taught by a small number of teachers. The competency curriculum takes up one third of the lessons and the rest of the time is taken up by English, Maths, Science, Art, Technology, French and PE. This model has proved very successful as it is enjoyable but also develops valuable personal learning and thinking skills.
In year 8 all subjects have discrete lessons so that students have a solid foundation and knowledge base to enable them to make sensible choices for study at Key Stage 4. The Key Stage curriculum is broadly based on the current National Curriculum requirements and consists of:

Culture and Communication – English, French, Drama

Maths and Applied – Mathematics, Music, Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

Life Sciences – Science, PE, Food Technology

Humanities – History, Geography, RE, PSHE

Art and Design – Art, Technology

Key Stage 4 – years 9, 10 and 11

From September 2011 Batley Girls’ High School has moved to a three year Key Stage 4 programme of study. This is to take account of national policy changes whilst still retaining our nationally acclaimed curriculum model. Students are placed into broad bands and then are allowed to choose from a wide range of options. The range of optional subjects is very large and incorporates traditional GCSEs, applied GCSEs, more vocational BTECs and a selection of work-based learning opportunities. The vast majority of courses are school-based but some may require visiting other schools, colleges or workplaces.

The number of qualifications that a student will take depends on their ability and their actual option choices. However, all students have the opportunity to access individualised advice to help them make decisions including qualifying for the English Baccalaureate, how many vocational courses they will take and the number and level of qualifications.

All students are involved in a target setting process and progress is monitored throughout the year. Individualised programmes and support ensure that all students achieve.
