Rewards and Sanctions
Praise and reward are some of the most important tools we have to motivate, inspire and promote success. Students respond positively to praise and reward, and good progress is firmly linked to formal recognition of effort and achievement.
At Foundation Stage (years 7 and 8) there are many opportunities for students to be rewarded:
Merits – awarded for achievement, good progress and good attitude to learning etc. These are recorded in the student planner and certificates and prizes are awarded for reaching specific thresholds.
Celebration Assemblies and Parties – taking place termly to celebrate success
Praise Slips – for exceptional work, attendance at clubs or coaching sessions etc
Respect Tokens – reward good citizenship and good manners and are placed in the ‘Respectometer’ in the LRC. Each term the tokens are replaced by money for the chosen school charities.
Sometimes it becomes necessary to impose sanctions upon students and the behaviour system is based on a pyramid of escalating seriousness.
Low level misbehaviour is recorded and faculties/pastoral managers will deal with it as required. After school detentions are imposed if students are persistently late, truant or are disruptive. Where students commit a serious misdemeanour, the Isolation Room is used as an immediate and effective sanction. Internal and external exclusions are the next stage and also referral to the Governors’ Disciplinary Committee.
At all stages the school will involve parents and carers to work together to modify behaviour patterns and it should be recognised that serious incidents are relatively rare.
