Student Support

The size and diversity of a large school may, at first, seem off-putting for your daughter. At Batley Girls’ High School we realise this and have put in place many things to enable your daughter to feel supported.

In year 7 students are placed in a tutor group which will be their teaching group for all of their Competency lessons. The year 7 tutor team is experienced and specialist transition tutors and they all teach their forms for some competency lessons. We believe it is important that the tutor establishes a good relationship with each student, providing a stable foundation and encouraging students to achieve their potential, both academically and socially.

Currently students are allocated to one of eight forms depending on their needs or talents. We have two ‘challenge’ forms for the academically gifted, a ‘talented’ form for those good at art, PE and music, three ‘key’ forms, a ‘nurture’ form for those needing extra support and a ‘focus’ form for those identified as underachieving by primary schools.

Year 7 form rooms are grouped together and their lockers are placed in the same area. In addition year 7 have an exclusive social area inside school for use at break and lunchtime. This was recently redecorated with inspiration from last year’s cohort. There is also a dedicated year 7 canteen and eating area.

Our Foundation Stage leader is Mrs Etchells and she oversees the year 7 team. She is ably assisted by Mrs Sanderson, the year 7 Pastoral Manager, whose sole responsibility is the welfare of the students. In addition there is a large student support team in school available to deal with students’ specific and individual needs.

We also encourage a strong partnership between home and school. Parents are required to sign a home-school agreement and to monitor the student planner regularly. The planner is the main source of communication between school and home and records homework as well as any important information. Of course parents are encouraged to contact school by telephone or email if they wish to.

All staff are determined to maintain high standards of work, appearance, behaviour and attendance, which will encourage all students to fulfil their potential. Our students are a testimony to the ordered, purposeful atmosphere in school which allows students to concentrate on their studies.

Respect for self, for others and for learning is one of the key missions of the school and we are proud that OFSTED said that ‘care, support and guidance are outstanding in every respect’ in the 2009 report.
