Dear Parent/Carer

Making a secondary school choice for your daughter is an important and difficult decision; at Batley Girls’ High School we appreciate this. Please take time to read our prospectus and visit the school, either on Open Evening or by contacting us directly. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask. We are proud of our school and are confident that your daughter will be happy and successful here.

Batley Girls’ High School was recently awarded academy status by the Department for Education in recognition of its excellent provision. The support of the community helped the school achieve this and was much appreciated. As a visual arts college, the school has an ethos based around the ideas of Achievement Respect Transformation (ART) and these tenets are clearly demonstrated throughout the school.

In terms of Achievement, Batley Girls’ High School achieved the highest value-added scores for its students across the whole of Kirklees in 2010. The recent 2011 results show an increase in students attaining 5 high grades GCSEs (or equivalent); this figure is now 92%. There was also an increase in those achieving both English and Maths. Post-16 pass rates are much higher than the national average and all other local providers. Batley Girls’ is not a selective school, it welcomes all abilities and it strives to get the best and most appropriate qualifications for all.

Respect for self, for others and for learning is deeply embedded within the school and relationships are happy and harmonious. A recent OFSTED inspection of PSHE gave the school an ‘Outstanding’ grade and the support, care and guidance offered to students was rated outstanding in the last full inspection. Students, parents and staff are able to take advantage of the support offered by our innovative Wellbeing Centre, there is an excellent learner support team and a dedicated pastoral care system. Girls are given every opportunity to flourish in a caring environment.

Batley Girls’ High School has transformed itself over the past decade. The site is a vibrant, busy place with new developments happening all the time. Recently a hairdressing salon was added and the farm expanded to accommodate more animals and crops. Girls are given the opportunity to transform themselves by taking advantage of what the school can offer; there is a rich programme of extra-curricular activities including clubs and trips. Also there are opportunities for the community; a large programme of adult classes with a visual arts focus, community gardens and allotments, and a link with the Open University offering courses to the public.

Batley Girls’ High School is a special place and we are looking forward to your daughter joining us.

Yours faithfully

Jo-anne Atkinson
