Pastoral System

At BGHS we believe that student wellbeing, safety and happiness is of the highest importance and it is a major priority of ours to ensure our young people want to be here, and want to and are able to learn.

In order to achieve this, we have an experienced team of staff dedicated to looking after the day-to-day welfare of our students.

Each Year group has a team of specialist tutors, who greet students each morning and help them to be prepared for the day and week ahead. Tutors help students to be organized, to know what is happening in school and what opportunities there are to get involved in extra enrichment activities, and generally keep an eye on progress, attendance and wellbeing.

Pastoral managers are key figures in having an overview of all the students in their identified cohort. We have four pastoral managers in school and they are linked to specific year groups: Transition = Y7, KS3 = Y8/9, KS4 = Y10/11 and KS5 = 6th form. Pastoral managers support tutors in monitoring, behaviour, attendance and the social and emotional wellbeing of the students in their care.

Form tutors and pastoral managers are often the first point of contact between school and home.

In our recent Ofsted report of 2009, we were judged as “outstanding’ for student support and guidance.

“Staff demonstrate a high level of concern for, and commitment to, students’ welfare; this is confirmed by students who, equally, show respect and care for each other.”
