Key Stage 5 (BG6: Y12-13 & Y14)

The BG6 Curriculum

The BG6 curriculum enables students to make personalised choices which support their career and educational aspirations. BG6 offers a broad range of academic and applied courses, with the majority of students following a three subject study programme across the two years of Sixth Form study. Entry requirements are set at a minimum expectation of four Grade 4s for vocational Level 3 study, and five Grade 4s for an academic A Level pathway. Students who have not yet achieved a grade 4 or above in English or mathematics have an opportunity to do this as part of their Study Programme. Entry to BG6 is personalised to each student so that every student, regardless of SEND or medical need, has equal entitlement and support to an appropriate Post 16 education. As such, the BG6 curriculum policy should be read in conjunction with the minimum subject guidelines and final decisions are taken by the BG6 Director and the Headteacher.

To complement the taught curriculum, support excellent progress, teach students the independent learning skills required in Level 3 qualifications and in Higher Education, and inspire a wider love of the academic discipline of study, students have an allocation of independent study periods built into their curriculum. Progress through the curriculum is monitored and evaluated through each student’s set of Curriculum Handbooks.

All our students have a personal tutor who they see every morning as well as during the weekly PSHE sessions. Year 12 students complete ‘The Progression Module’ with the support of their tutor, colleagues from the University of Huddersfield and the leadership in BG6. We also have an extensive enrichment offer which all students participate in through a termly menu of choices. In addition, we aim to offer a wide range of opportunities, including initiatives such as The Brilliant Club, Reach for Excellence, Realising Opportunities and the Extended Project Qualification.

Personalised study programmes are at the heart of our BG6 offer and our Careers Team delivers an extensive programme to ensure that all students have opportunities to develop their soft skills and knowledge in addition to the formal curriculum. All Sixth Form students complete a work experience placement and have a mock interview with an employer in addition to tailored opportunities such as the RAISED in Yorkshire Research Group, the BGHS PPIE Group and our Raising Aspirations Programme and Employability Programmes. Each year the Enrichment and Personalised study programmes are reviewed and action taken to maintain and enhance its quality and relevance to each cohort.
