4. How will Batley Girls’ High School and I know how my child is progressing and developing, and how will you help to support their learning?

What are the arrangements for assessing and reviewing the progress of students with SEND?

We regularly assess all our students to ensure that they make expected progress throughout the year. This is in the form of regular teacher assessment which is collated and analysed by the SENDCo and other relevant key staff. We also hold regular Additional Needs Team meetings where there is a holistic approach to the individual student’s well-being and progress.

What opportunities will there be for me to discuss my child’s progress with the staff?

At our school we hold regular Parents’ Evenings where you can discuss your child with individual teachers. In addition, the SEND Department hold individual reviews for certain students where the need is deemed to be greater. We also hold reviews of our students who have ‘My support Plans’. At BGHS we actively encourage parental involvement. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to visit the school and speak to a member of staff. Please contact your child's Pastoral Manager or the SENDCo in the first instance.

How will you know how well my child is progressing and developing?

The regular collection of data is analysed in line with National Standards. Should a learning need be identified, parents/carers will be informed and strategies to support the student will be introduced. In the first instance, this may involve supporting through further differentiation within individual lessons, ensuring that the learning style of your child is recognised. Further strategies employed can be:

  • Mentoring;
  • Small group support
  • In class support
  • Involvement of outside agencies.

What opportunities will there be for regular contact about things that have happened both at home and at school?

All our students carry with them Personal Planners. These can be used as a means of communicating information both to and from school. Should you wish to contact school by telephone, then your child's Pastoral Manager or the SENdCo should be the initial contact.

How will I be able to raise any concerns I may have about my child, her support and her progress?

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any concerns about your daughter’s progress or learning in school. In the first instance contact your daughter’s Pastoral Manager or the SENDCo. How will you explain to me how learning is planned and how I can help support this outside the school? Learning is planned by individual teachers with support from the SEND Department where necessary. Homework is provided regularly for all our students and advice on how parents can assist is readily available from the school. Where specific learning difficulties occur, parents will be consulted individually.

How and when will I be involved in planning my child’s education?

Your voice can be heard through the Review process, both for students with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP) and students who have ‘My support Plans’.

Do you offer any parent training or learning events?

At Batley Girls’ High School we encourage parents to become involved in our Parent Forum. We also offer a range of training to support the development of skills and the progress of our students. Please consult the Parents Forum for Forum updates:

Will I be able to discuss issues with the SENCo before my child starts at the school?

Absolutely! We would encourage all parents/carers to visit the school and speak to relevant staff. This can be as early as Year 5.
