Key Stage 5 (BG6: Y12-13 & Aspire to Educate)

The BG6 Curriculum

The BG6 curriculum enables learners to make personalised choices which support their career and educational aspirations. BG6 offers a broad range of pathways consisting of Level 2, A Level and Level 3 Applied Courses to best suit learner needs and progression aims. Complementing the core qualifications BG6 offers Maths and English resits, as well as additional Level 3 qualifications including; AQA Unit Awards, Core Maths, Level 3 Debating and EPQ (Extended Project Qualification).

The third strand to the BG6 (Key Stage 5) curriculum provision are our exceptional supra-curricular, enrichment, and work experience programmes where learners are able to discover and enhance their aspirations to work to university, a higher level apprenticeship or their first work contract. Our tutorial and PSHE programmes wrap around the core curriculum provision and help to prepare our learners to excel in life in modern Britain.

Entry to BG6 is personalised to each learner so that every learner, regardless of any additional need, has equity and support to an appropriate post-16 education. As such, the BG6 curriculum policy should be read in conjunction with the minimum subject guidelines and final decisions are taken by the BG6 Director and the Headteacher.

All our learners have a personal tutor who they see every morning as well as during the weekly PSHE sessions. Year 12 students complete ‘The Progression Module’ with the support of their tutor, colleagues from the University of Huddersfield and the leadership in BG6. We also have an extensive enrichment offer which all learners participate in through a termly menu of choices. In addition, we offer a wide range of opportunities, initiatives including; Oxbridge and UCAT preparation, with external partnerships for; the Ernst Young Foundation, the Futures Programmes at the University of Leads, Reach for Excellence, Realising Opportunities and the Social Mobility Foundation.

Each year the enrichment and supra-curricular programmes are reviewed, maintained and enhanced for quality and relevance. Delivering a personalised and empowering programme is at the heart of our BG6 curriculum.

All BG6 learners complete a work experience placement and have a mock interview with an employer in addition to tailored opportunities such as the RAISED in Yorkshire Research Group, the BGHS PPIE Group and our Raising Aspirations Programme and Employability Programmes. Each year the Enrichment and Personalised study programmes are reviewed and action taken to maintain and enhance its quality and relevance to each cohort.
